Science Year

Towards a sustainable economy!

The global population is growing, our standard of living is increasing and we are faced with environmental challenges such as anthropogenic climate change, ocean litter, a declining availability of arable land and dwindling fossil resources. This requires us to transform today’s oil based economy towards the sustainable use of renewable resources, that is to say, towards the bioeconomy!

The necessity of this change is already widely accepted. The right time has come to talk about how we want to shape this change, which is why Science Year 2020/21 will focus on the bioeconomy.

What can we do to live more sustainably and save resources while also maintaining our standard of living? How can science and technology support us on this path? Science Year 2020/21 gives the public the opportunity to experience potential solutions that have already emerged from research. Many new technologies and procedures can help us produce, process and utilize resources and products differently in the future. Whether it is plant based building and insulation materials, pollutant degrading microorganisms, kerosene substitutes made from algae or self decomposing plastics.
